| Hey, deviants! I am an editor of a magazine whose focus is bringing poetry together with artwork (mostly black and white) to excite and captivate the imagination of a very diverse readership. What that means is that our readership represents people of all ages (anywhere from middleschool to retired.) The kinds of art we are looking for include: 1) Any work of natural art- Trees, water, landforms, animals, you name it. 2) Objective art- Any object that is wierd in shape, theme, or design. Objects conveying hot/cold, soft/harsh, fluidity and rigid geometrical angles work very well. 3) Locations- Any location or form of transportation that looks ominous, old, historical, or otherwise sunny and cheery will do. 4) Anything conveying emotion- pictures of people, fictional drawings, animals displaying "human" emotions, etc. 5) Anything dark, haunting and/or mildly creepy. Black and white printing does supreme justice to artwork involving shadows, danger, and mystery. 6) Black and White/Color- Black and white describes most of the art work we will be accepting for use in our magazine. It is possible that we will be doing color prints for cover pages on some of the issues we put together. However, colored art represents maybe 2-5% of our magazine's total interest. MEDIUMS: We encourage artwork from nearly every medium you could think of- pencil, ink, oil, sculpture, photography, computer software, etc. The more diversity we can pull from different artistic mediums, the better. There are some limitations on what work we will and will not accept: 1) First, and foremost, we are only interested in artwork and artists who best represent the poetry contained in each issue. All of you have artwork that you deserve to get paid for, but not all of you necessarily have artwork that we need. We are primarily looking for artists who enjoy the challenge of reading from a small selection of poems and producing art that they feel suits the mood of one or more within the selection. However, I will be browsing around this website from time to time, and if I do see a deviation that has awesome "poetic potential," I may contact you and ask for permission to make your image available to poets who enjoy the challenge of writing to art. 2) Nudity- Our editorial staff feels very strongly that the human body can be an alluring and tasteful form of art. That said, we will be incredibly vigilant to keep overly-erotic/sexual content from the pages of our magazine. For your knowledge, we absolutely will not accept any art that shows a part of the body normally covered by a pair of boxers or panties. As for the female form, we also will not accept pictures that show the full breast (with nipples.) 3) Blood- We will accept a mild degree of blood in our magazine, but we understand completely that there is a difference between "blood" and "gore." The latter will not be accepted. If your art contains more blood than we feel is tasteful, your art will not be accepted. Keep in mind that we have a readership that potentially extends to high-school and middle-school aged children. Take note of what kinds of deviations most people post with "cautions" and you should have a good indication of your artistic boundaries with us. 4) Alcohol, tobacco, and drugs in art- Opportunities for artwork portraying chemical substances will be extremely few and very limited. This magazine greatly limits the poets themselves for their poetic license to write about substances within our pages. How much greater then, is the artwork limited, since all artwork in our magazine relies on poetry in the first place? Most likely, our editorial staff will "let the artist know" if and when this kind of opportunity does arise. Just be aware that if there is any need for this style of art, we will be asking for artwork that portrays chemical substances in a negative/addictive light. |
thanks
